Scott himself used the method to learn four new languages in a year, fully immersing himself in the language in a project he called ‘the year without English’. For 4x three-months he learned Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin and Korean, while living in Spain, Brazil, China and South-Korea. He also used the approach in a project he called ‘the MIT Challenge’, where he learned the three-year computer science curriculum of MIT (known for being notoriously difficult), in a single year of self-study. He also used it for shorter challenges, such as learning how to draw a self-portrait in a month.
